Augusta, Maine - Visitors to Roque Bluffs State Park in the Down East community of Roque Bluffs can welcome in summer this Saturday with a unique two-part event that includes both sculpture and celebration.The newly installed sculpture, “Warm Wind,” by Kazumi Hoshino of Steuben, created at the 2011 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium (SISS), will be dedicated mid-afternoon by Symposium and Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands officials.
Following the dedication will be the Roque Bluffs 2012 Fourth Annual Summer Solstice Celebration, including music, drumming and a lobster feed overlooking the park’s beautiful beach.
“It’s a chance to get to the park and meet community members,” Park Manager Rich Donaher said of the event. “It’s a chance to appreciate the beach, the ocean and the natural beauty of the setting. And it’s a chance to share good fun and entertainment.”
The details of the event are:
3-4 p.m., Sculpture Dedication;
4:30 p.m., Summer Solstice Celebration; park admission fees apply;
Picnic meal:
Lobster - $17 in advance or $20 at the door,
Chicken- $10 in advance or $13 at the door;
Children’s menu (under 10); one piece of chicken or hot dog, $5.
Tickets can be purchased at Whole Life Market in Machias or the Machias Chamber of Commerce, or call Roque Bluffs State Park at 255-3475.
The unique stone sculpture with its gentle oval shape by Hoshino was installed last October as part of the Schoodic Symposium’s 2011 class, Donaher said. The local community was “very supportive” of the sculpture project, now installed along with an explanatory plaque and cedar fencing.
“I like that we have the perfect spot for it,” the park manager said. “It lends itself to artistic interpretation, which is the cool thing about it. It’s something that will always be thought of in any form because it’s not specific.”
The sculpture also is listed now on the SISS art tour of coastal Maine, so it no doubt will draw visitors to the park, he added.
The afternoon dedication ceremony will include remarks from the sculptor, Jesse Salisbury, SISS founder and BPL officials. Bagpipe music will be provided by Kara McCrimmon. Light refreshments also will be served.
Following the dedication, visitors can head to the north end of the park, on the bluff overlooking the beach, where a large event tent will be set up for the Solstice Celebration, Donaher said.
“It’s the perfect time of year for a celebration,” the park manager said. “You don’t hear a lot about other solstice activities, and this is kind of a unique event.”
Attendance has grown since the celebration’s inception, from 45 the first year to 75 people last year, Donaher said. “We’re hoping for more this year – it’s a big turnout for our population area,” he said.
Starting off the celebration will be music provided by the group, the Pink Capos, and at 4:30 p.m., Jocelyn Hubbell, BPL park interpretive specialist, will give a natural history presentation on lobsters – from egg to plate.
The picnic supper will be served beginning at 5 p.m., with lobster and steamers or barbecued chicken and potato on the grill. Both meals will be served with corn on the cob, coleslaw or green salad, beverage and for desert, ice cream and home-made hot fudge sauce.
Dinner will be enhanced by the music of The Pink Capos and the Roque Bluff Singers, a local choral group led by director Alan Richards. Following dinner, around 6 p.m., participants will be able to drum in the summer solstice, or “wake the bear,” as Donaher called it.
