A highlight for many Star Wars Celebration VI goers was the presentation of "Smuggler’s Gambit," a new 30 page radio drama that faithfully brings back the feelings of the old NPR Star Wars radio plays. This non-canon work takes place immediately after Episode IV and was written by Kyle Newman (writer/director of "Fanboys") and  F.J. DeSanto.

The plot revolved around Han Solo but also included classic characters like Luke, Leia, Chewie, R2, and Boba. There were also new characters added specifically for this production, all of them voiced by members of the Clone Wars cast including a very believable Han Solo voiced by David Collins and sound effects by the Force Cast podcast's producer Jimmy Mac.

  • Ashley Eckstein as Ryder Thorne
  • Sam Witwer as Ro Kurota
  • Matt Lanter as Luke Skywalker
  • Dee Bradley Baker as Prince Xixor
  • Clare Grant as Princess Leia

After the presentation the packed hall erupted with applause at this new story brought to life by this amazing cast! Everyone was asking if this would be the start in bringing back the old-school Star Wars radio dramas. I do hope so. I remember tuning in every week to hear my favorite films come alive over the radio. As a radio/audio guy myself I hope they do bring back this type of storytelling. If anything this makes me crave a new show, radio, animated or otherwise based on the characters of the original trilogy.

What do you think? Would you buy into these productions? Check out the slideshow! All photos by Kristen Hoetzel Photography (C) 2012, used by permission.
