Ellsworth, Maine - The Grand’s hot, new film program CineGrand continues with acclaimed director Steven (“Traffic”, “Erin Brockovich”) Soderbergh’s action-packed globe-trotting suspense thriller “Haywire” on Friday, May 25th through Sunday May 27th at 7pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2pm.

“Haywire”, Soderbergh’s first all-out action film, tells the story of Mallory Kane (MMA superstar Gina Carano in her screen debut) a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive. With a rogues gallery of international actors including Ewan MacGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and Bill Pullman.

The Grand is excited to present a new monthly program of the best reviewed (with the hottest buzz) movies. CineGrand screens one title per month (at least!) for three days to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy a movie the way it was meant to be enjoyed – projected on the big screen in a darkened theatre with hot buttered popcorn. Future titles include our annual Summer French Film series beginning with “Love Crime” starring Ludivine Sagnier (“Swimming Pool”, “Love Songs”) and Kristin Scott Thomas (“Tell No One”, “The English Patient”) on Thursday, June 28th through Saturday June 30th.

Boston, Massachusetts – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band made history on September 6, 2003 when they headlined the first ever rock concert at Boston’s Fenway Park.  Today, Springsteen and his band are excited to announce that they will celebrate Fenway Park’s 100th Anniversary by bringing the 2012 ‘Wrecking Ball’ World Tour to the legendary ballpark on August 14, pending city approval.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band just finished the first U.S. leg of the tour barnstorming across the country and earning accolades for their stellar performances.  Rolling Stone called the show "epic," the New York Times said "explosive" and the Boston Globe wrote of the concert's "energy that bordered on superhuman."  The ‘Wrecking Ball’ World Tour heads to Europe between May 13 and July 31 before the new dates begin.

Three Poets at LPL


Lewiston, Maine - The Lewiston Public Library is partnering with LA Arts to present The Poet as Art, a public poetry series.  The first event will take place this Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m in the Library's Callahan Hall with three Maine poets reading from their work and discussing their writing processes.

The featured poets in this free public reading are Megan Grumbling, Gibson Fay-LeBlanc and Chris Seid.  Copies of their books will be available for sale at the event and the writers will be signing their works following the reading.

Megan Grumbling

Megan Grumbling’s work has appeared in Poetry, The Iowa Review, and The Antioch Review and was awarded a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation. She teaches writing at the University of New England and Southern Maine Community College, edits reviews for The Café Review, reviews theatre
for the Portland Phoenix, and coordinates the LIT series for Mayo Street Arts.                                         


Gibson Fay-LeBlanc
Gibson Fay-LeBlanc is a writer and teacher. His first collection of poems, Death of a Ventriloquist, was chosen by Lisa Russ Spaar for the Vassar Miller Prize and published in 2012. His poems have appeared in magazines including Guernica, The New Republic, and Tin House and received awards from the Bellevue Literary Review and UC Berkeley. With graduate degrees from UC Berkeley and Columbia University, he has taught writing and literature in public and private middle schools, high schools, and colleges in California, Vermont, New York, and Maine. In 2011 he was named one of Maine’s “emerging leaders” by the Portland Press Herald and Maine Today Media for his work directing The Telling Room, where he still occasionally teaches writing. He is the Poetry Editor of Maine Magazine and is at work on a novel.

Christopher Seid
Christopher Seid was born and raised in Iowa. He lived in New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Southern California and Brooklyn before moving to Maine in 2002. He attended the University of Iowa as an undergrad and received an MFA from Vermont College. His first--and only--book of poems, Prayers to the Other Life, won the Marianne Moore Poetry Prize. His second book, Tranquility Base, needs a few finishing touches before it's ready for prime time. Chris lives in Yarmouth with his two children and works as a freelance writer.

Hernandez and Kurcz combine to spin a beauty

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (12-22) notched four runs in the fifth and held on to defeat the Trenton Thunder (16-16) 4-2 Friday night at waterfront Park. The win marks only the second in Portland's eight meetings against the Thunder.

With the game scoreless heading into the fifth inning, the first six Portland hitters reached, and four scored to give the Sea Dogs the lead. Reynaldo Rodriguez jolted his sixth homerun of the season to lead off the frame and put the Sea Dogs in front 1-0.

Ryan Pope was the first arm out of the bullpen for the Thunder when starter Graham Stoneburner left after seven outs with an injury. Pope (1-4) gave up the homerun and Oscar Tejeda followed with a single.

Bryce Brentz doubled home Tejeda, and Dan Butler followed with another two-bagger that ended Pope's night on the mound. Brentz scored on a bases loaded walk, drawn by Heiker Meneses off of Lee Hyde. Kolbrin Vitek drove home the final run with a groundout to the shortstop Addison Maruszak. Six pitchers combined to toss nine innings for the Thunder in the affair.

Portland starter Chris Hernandez was solid again in his seventh start of the season. The lefty dissected the Trenton order through six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh. With two down in the inning Trenton third baseman Kavin Mahoney singled and catcher Jose Gil followed with a two run homer that forced Hernandez (2-2) out of the ballgame.

Aaron Kurcz was the only relief the Sea Dogs needed. The righty finished the seventh with a strikeout and allowed one baserunner over the final two and one-third innings. Kurcz earned his second save and struck out five in his outing.

Right-handed pitcher Billy Buckner (1-2, 3.94) will get the start for the Sea Dogs. Trenton will send righty Cory Arbiso (0-0, 3.09) to the hill. Fans of the Disney Channel hit series Shake It Up will be able to watch an all new episode entitled "Tunnel It Up" this Sunday at 8:30pm. In this episode "Tunnel It Up", CeCe hatches a plan that will allow her and Rocky to tape a "Shake It Up, Chicago" national special and be at a school dance on the same night. Meanwhile, Deuce ends up having to bring Flynn to the dance.


Shake It Up stars Bella Thorne and Zendaya as CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue, Davis Cleveland as Flynn Jones, Roshon Fegan as Ty Blue, Adam Irigoyen as Deuce Martinez, Kenton Duty as Gunther Hessenheffer and Caroline Sunshine as Tinka Hessenheffer.  Recurring are R. Brandon Johnson as Gary Wilde and Anita Barone as Georgia Jones.

Murton and Johnson power Thunder in win


Portland, Maine - The Trenton Thunder (17-16) notched three in the sixth and two more in the seventh in the 5-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (12-23) Saturday night at Waterfront Park.

Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, with a runner on second, Trenton's first baseman Luke Murton powered a homerun off of Portland starter Billy Buckner and put the Thunder out in front for good at 2-1. Cody Johnson followed suit and went back-to-back with Murton, with a solo homerun to center off of the righty.

The Sea Dogs scored their lone run in the top of the first inning on back-to-back doubles with two out by Oscar Tejeda and Reynaldo Rodriguez. Cory Arbiso (1-0) silenced the Portland bats after the first and finished his night after seven innings. The righty allowed just the one run on four hits, he walked two, and struck out two.

Buckner (1-3) had cruised through the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. The righty scattered two hits, struck out five Thunder hitters, and walked just one before Abraham Almonte earned a free pass to begin the sixth inning.

Caleb Clay came on in relief and allowed two runs on a Murton double in the seventh. Josh Fields was the final Portland pitcher out of the pen and delivered a perfect eighth.

Augusta, Maine - On Monday, Governor Paul LePage will announce the award winners for the 22nd Annual Governor’s Award for Business Excellence. The 2012 honors will be presented to six Maine businesses for their outstanding commitment to their employees, their communities and to business excellence. Speakers will include Governor Paul LePage, Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner George Gervais, and FairPoint Communications President Mike Reed. The awards have been sponsored by FairPoint Communications for the past five years.

The awards ceremony will take place in the Hall of Flags at the State House on Monday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m.

The Governor’s Award for Business Excellence honors businesses that go above and beyond typical community service, which in turn has a far-reaching positive effect on employees and communities. “These companies have earned a reputation for top quality products and services,” said Governor LePage. “I look forward to recognizing their efforts.”
