Finally a Princess who does not deal with love and heartache of a prince!
Sofia the First is a princess who will change your idea of how Disney presents their heroines. Sofia is a role model that young girls can relate to. She experiences the same social issues as kids do today - how to fit in, learning new skills and working on sibling/friend relationships from diverse backgrounds. That being said, do we really need to have a princess to represent an ethnic race? We heard about the faux pas that Sofia was to to be the first Latin Princess and then it was retracted. In fact, she was introduced - informally and haphazardly - as Disney's first Hispanic princess by someone who ought to know, the executive producer of the TV movie, Jaime Mitchell.
In discussing Sofia with Entertainment Weekly, she confirmed it by saying, "she is Latina." Mitchell also confirmed that Sofia was the first Hispanic princess to hold court in the Magic Kingdom It was a clumsy mistake made by Mitchell. Our current Disney heroines are pretty much saved by true love and seem to have the big, pool deep, puppy eyes - Snow White, Cinderella, Belle and Sleeping Beauty, then there is the racial and ethnic wing: Mulan (Asian), Jasmine (Middle Eastern), Pocahontas (Native American) and Tiana (African-American), but according to Craig Gerber, co-executive producer and writer on the project, Sofia was born and raised in Enchancia, a "make-believe 'melting pot' kingdom." patterned on the British Isles. He also adds that the princess’ birth father is from another fictional, unnamed country based on Scandinavia. Ambiguously Ethnic is not a bad thing in my opinion because I do not care about race.
A two year old is not ready to deal with race and diverse culture. They are still learning to eat with utensils and making sure they let you know that they pooped (by sight, sound or smell). It's about first impressions, as Sofia encounters a wizard, step-siblings, talking animals that understand her and a royal steward who "makes it work." It seems to help provide a breakthrough character who's kindness, generosity, honesty, grace and love shine through. That's what I am talking about!
I do still see the same punchline through all the movies - a character who does not fully understand who and why they are, but conquers their trials and tribulations. It is the course of nature! If am going to infiltrate a gorilla social structure I will have to deal with a Silverback!
My two cents - Back to being Rated G.
Sofia the First is aimed at children aged 2 - 7 years of age. I had the opportunity to take my 3 year old the premiere on the Disney Studio lot and was really nervous about her attention span. Sofia the First does not wait to get into the meat of the story and my daughter was intrigued right from the start. Not only did she pretty much sit through the movie, she grabbed a wonderful young lady's hand each time music played and swayed to the beat. I was completely shocked that my little girl approached a total stranger and let her innocence and happiness shine through (teary eyed here).
Modern Family's Ariel Winter is joined by Sara Ramirez of Grey's Anatomy as her mom Queen Miranda, Wayne Brady is wise-talking Clover the Rabbit, Jennifer Hale as Cinderella and Tim Gunn as Baileywick the Royal Steward. Premieres at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, on Disney Channel and at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, on sister channel Disney Junior and her own series Spring 2013 on Disney and Disney Junior channels worldwide.
