ABC ANNOUNCES EARLY PICK-UPS FOR NEXT SEASON

“Castle,” “Cougar Town,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Middle,” “Modern Family”

And “Private Practice” Receive Early Pick-ups for the 2011-12 Season

ABC announced early pick-ups for the 2011-12 season of “Castle,” “Cougar Town,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Middle,” “Modern Family” and “Private Practice.”

A solid mix of promising new series and proven returning hits helped the network achieve a strong start to the 2010-11 TV season. Season to date among Adults 18-49, ABC delivers 4 of the Top 10 highest-rated TV shows, the most for any network, including the Top 2 scripted programs. In fact among young adults, the network claims TV’s No. 1 comedy (“Modern Family”), the No. 1 drama (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and the No. 1 unscripted series (“Dancing with the Stars”). In Total Viewers, the network airs 2 of the Top 4 programs, including America’s No. 1 most-watched TV show overall with “Dancing with the Stars.” Led by Emmy-winning “Modern Family,” ABC’s 2-hour Wednesday night comedy block continues to resonate with viewers in its second year, surging by 15% in Total Viewers and by 14% in the key Adult 18-49 sales demographic from the same point last season.

“CASTLE”

When viewers first met Richard Castle -- a famous mystery novelist and divorced father raising his teenage daughter, while being kept grounded by his Broadway diva mother -- he was creatively blocked. But when the NYPD questioned him in connection with a series of murders staged to imitate crime scenes from his books, Castle found inspiration in NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, a bright and aggressive homicide detective with a fascination for odd and offbeat cases stemming from the years-old unsolved murder of her own mother. Though they instantly clashed, sparks of another sort began to fly, leading both to danger and a hint of romance as Castle stepped in to help find the copycat killer. Once that initial case was solved, Castle and Beckett continued to investigate strange homicides in New York, combining Castle’s writer intuition and Beckett’s creative detective work.

The series stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett, Ruben Santiago-Hudson as NYPD Captain Roy Montgomery, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas as NYPD Detective Javier Esposito, Seamus Dever as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, with Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers.

“Castle” is produced by ABC Studios. Andrew Marlowe is creator/executive producer, with Rob Bowman, Laurie Zaks, David Amann and Armyan Bernstein also executive producers.

“COUGAR TOWN”

Courteney Cox stars as Jules Cobb in her Golden Globe®-nominated role as a recently divorced mom in her forties facing the often humorous challenges, pitfalls and rewards of life’s next chapter. Along for the journey are her son – a college freshman -- ex-husband and friends who, together, make up her dysfunctional but supportive and caring extended family… even if they have a funny way of showing it sometimes.

“Cougar Town” stars Courteney Cox as Jules, Christa Miller as Ellie, Busy Philipps as Laurie, Dan Byrd as Travis, Josh Hopkins as Grayson, Ian Gomez as Andy and Brian Van Holt as Bobby and is executive produced by Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs”), Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Kevin Biegel (“Scrubs”).

“GREY’S ANATOMY”

“Grey's Anatomy” is the recipient of the 2007 Golden Globe® Award for Best Television Series – Drama, and multiple Emmy nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series.

The doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital deal with life-or-death consequences on a daily basis – it’s in one another that they find comfort, friendship and, at times, more than friendship. Together they’re discovering that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey.

“Grey’s Anatomy” stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd, Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang, Justin Chambers as Alex Karev, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens, Jr. as Richard Webber, Sara Ramirez as Callie Torres, Eric Dane as Mark Sloan, Chyler Leigh as Lexie Grey, Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, Jessica Capshaw as Arizona Robbins, Kim Raver as Teddy Altman, Jesse Williams as Jackson Avery and Sarah Drew as April Kepner.

“Grey’s Anatomy” was created and is executive-produced by Shonda Rhimes. Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Rob Corn, Mark Wilding, Tony Phelan, Joan Rater are executive producers. “Grey’s Anatomy” is an ABC Studios production.

“THE MIDDLE”

Two-time Emmy winner Patricia Heaton stars in this warm and witty single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations. Middle-aged, middle class and living in the middle of the country in Orson, Indiana, Frankie Heck is a harried wife and working mother of three who uses her wry wit and sense of humor in an attempt to get her family through each day intact. Her work life’s no easier. With her friend and co-worker, Bob, she struggles day to day as the least successful sales woman at the town’s only surviving car dealer. Frankie’s unflappable husband, Mike, is manager at the local quarry and her sardonic partner in the daily grind that is raising their average – yes, most definitely average – family.

Between juggling shifts and picking up fast food dinners eaten in front of the TV, Frankie and Mike raise their kids with love, humor and solid Midwestern practicality. Axl, the oldest, is a teenage jock who eats them out of house and home and walks around the house in his underwear. Then there’s Sue, their extraordinarily ordinary teen daughter, who fails at just about everything she tries with great gusto – although she’s hoping her recent acceptance on the school’s beleaguered no-cut cross country team might just turn things around. And last is Brick, their quirky third-grader, who reads constantly, whispers to himself and has a best friend who’s his backpack. But through all the madness shines a loving family, and together, the Hecks are putting THE MIDDLE on the map.

“The Middle” stars Patricia Heaton as Frankie, Neil Flynn as Mike, Charlie McDermott as Axl, Eden Sher as Sue, Atticus Shaffer as Brick and Chris Kattan as Bob.

“The Middle” was created and is executive produced by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. The series is from Warner Bros. Television.

“MODERN FAMILY”

ABC’s Emmy Award-winning hit comedy “Modern Family” takes a modern and often hilarious look at the complications that come with being a family today. Jay Pritchett, with his much younger wife Gloria and her son Manny, sits as the patriarch of a large blended family that includes his grown daughter Claire, who has three kids of her own with her husband Phil, and a grown son Mitchell, who adopted a Vietnamese baby with his gay life partner Cameron. These three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give us a window into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted embrace of the modern family.

“Modern Family” stars Ed O’Neill as Jay, Sofía Vergara as Gloria, Julie Bowen as Claire, Ty Burrell as Phil, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Sarah Hyland as Haley, Ariel Winter as Alex, Nolan Gould as Luke and Rico Rodriguez as Manny.

The series is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television in association with Levitan Lloyd Productions. Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd are executive producers/creators.

“PRIVATE PRACTICE”

From Shonda Rhimes, the Golden Globe-winning creator of “Grey’s Anatomy,” comes the story of a team of gifted doctors working together to change the lives of their patients for the better as they look to one another for friendship and love.

The doctors of Oceanside Wellness and Pacific Wellcare work on the most difficult cases, patients whose medical needs often pose moral and ethical dilemmas. Though they may heatedly disagree at work, and though their personal lives may complicate matters, at the end of the day they are the best of friends , always ready to be there for each other.

“Private Practice” stars Kate Walsh as Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery, Tim Daly as Dr. Pete Wilder, Audra McDonald as Dr. Naomi Bennett, Paul Adelstein as Dr. Cooper Freedman, KaDee Strickland as Dr. Charlotte King, Brian Benben as Dr. Sheldon Wallace and Caterina Scorsone as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, with Taye Diggs as Dr. Sam Bennett and Amy Brenneman as Dr. Violet Turner.

“Private Practice” was created by Shonda Rhimes and is executive-produced by Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Mark Tinker, Steve Blackman and Craig Turk. “Private Practice” is an ABC Studios Production.

New Nature Center at Ferry Beach State Park to Hold Grand Opening

To contact us Click HERE

AUGUSTA, Maine – A brand-new nature center highlighting the unique natural landscapes found at Ferry Beach State Park in Saco will hold its grand opening this week.

The Ferry Beach State Park Nature Center will be opened formally on Saturday, July 14, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an afternoon-long event for children and families that will feature lots of activities, trail explorations and even a live-owl presentation.

The result of several years of planning and fund raising, the new nature center is expected to create an appreciation of the special natural features at Ferry Beach State Park, while providing an educational element to park visits, according to officials of Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL), under the Maine Department of Conservation.

“We always want our visitors to have fun and create special memories when they visit any of our 48 state parks and historic sites,” said Will Harris, BPL director. “The new Ferry Beach State Park Nature Center will provide another component that will enrich their experience here and encourage them to understand why Ferry Beach is a very special place in Maine.”

The nature center “will enhance the educational dimension and help create an appreciation for Ferry Beach State Park,” said Jocelyn Hubbell, BPL interpretive specialist. “It also will help visitors understand the role of Maine state parks in preserving special places.”

Details of the event are:

Ferry Beach State Park Nature Center Grand Opening, 1-6 p.m., Saturday, July 14, Ferry Beach State Park; free with park admission; 1 p.m., ribbon-cutting ceremony; 1:30-6 p.m., 3-D slideshow presentation, "Nature Under Your Nose," by renown photographer and architect Roger Richmond; interactive displays, activities, trail explorations and raffle; 4:30 p.m., live-owl presentation. For more information, call (207) 283-0067.

Established in 1969, Ferry Beach State Park is a 127-acre park that features a variety of landscapes, including a popular beach with dunes and a pond and marsh area. It also is known for having a stand of tupelo, or black gum, trees, which are rare at the park’s latitude.

The park also has a picnic area, nature trails, guided nature programs, and a changing facility. Last year, some 32,000 people visited Ferry Beach State Park.

The new nature center is an extension of the varied interpretive programs that have been presented over the years at the park, Hubbell said.

“It will increase our capability to provide programs to both drop-in visitors and school groups,” the park official said. The center will feature hands-on, “discovery stations” and rotating, temporary exhibits, Hubbell said.

Fund raising began in 2009 for the project, which was completed this spring at a total cost of $250,000.

In particular, two anonymous $50,000 donations from the Saco area helped make the center a reality, the park official said. Other funding came from the Land & Water Conservation Fund, Recreational Trails Program, Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, Land for Maine’s Future, and the November 2010 state bond.

The nature center consists of an attractive, 40-by-50-foot natural wood building, with one main room and two smaller rooms for programs and office space. It features an energy-efficient concrete floor and solar sky lights. The center will be used for groups and contain rotating, temporary exhibits, Hubbell said.

Lincoln Theater to Bring Back Frankenstein

Damariscotta, Maine - Due to popular request, for one night only on Thursday, July 19 at 7 PM,  Lincoln Theater will be screening an encore broadcast from the National Theater in London of Frankenstein, a new play by Nick Dear based on the novel by Mary Shelley.  Running just 2 hours with no intermission, Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire) returned to the theater to direct this visionary production with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller.  Benedict Cumberatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternate the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature in two electrifying broadcasts.  The encore will be the “reverse” production, the one not shown previously at Lincoln Theater.

In this multiple award-winning play, childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein's bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.

Tickets are just $15 for adults and $5 for children.  Additional information can be found on the theater’s website at www.aththelincoln.org or by calling 563-3424 during normal box office hours, Tuesday through Friday from 1-5 PM.

Algae and Architecture: Two Bigelow Café Scientifique Events July 17 and July 19

To contact us Click HERE

EAST BOOTHBAY, ME – Bigelow Laboratory is hosting two separate Café Scientifique events during the third week of July. At 6 p.m. on Tuesday July 17 in the Boothbay Harbor Opera House at 86 Townsend Avenue, Dr. Willie Wilson, Director of the Laboratory’s National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota (NCMA), will lead a discussion titled Marine Algae—the Planet’s Second Lung. Wilson will discuss the key role that marine algae have in the global processes that sustain life, and describe NCMA’s role in advancing algal research throughout the world.

“Besides providing half of the oxygen we breathe on this planet, many species of microscopic single-celled marine plants contain large amounts of natural oils, and could hold the key to a significant, domestic, carbon-neutral source of renewable energy,” Wilson said.

A leading marine virologist, Wilson has been a Senior Research Scientist at Bigelow Laboratory since 2007. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick, UK, and was recently featured on Radiolab, National Public Radio’s popular weekly science talk show.

Two days later, at 6 p.m. on Thursday July 19, the Laboratory is inviting the public to a special Café Scientifique gathering in the Commons of the new Bigelow Ocean Science and Education Campus at 60 Bigelow Drive in East Boothbay to hear Perkins+Will principal architect and laboratory planner Gary Shaw talk about Stone, Soffits, and Scientists—Building a Sustainable Research Campus and Community on the Coast of Maine. Shaw is one of the lead architects on the design and engineering team developing the Laboratory’s state-of-the-art science facilities on its 64-acre shorefront property in East Boothbay. Two of the science wings of the new building are completed and occupied; the third will be ready in mid-November.

Over the course of his career, Shaw has led the planning and implementation of more than 5 million square feet of research facilities, including new buildings and renovation projects for academic and biopharmaceutical clients.

“My professional goal is to effectively plan innovative research environments that inspire scientists while giving them uniquely effective facilities that enable every aspect of the discovery process,” he said. “In working with the Bigelow scientists, I realized that I’d never encountered a community of individuals quite so dedicated to the crucial work of unraveling the secrets of our oceans and how they interact with our atmosphere and the shore. This is hugely important to every one of us living on this wonderful and fragile planet. We should all feel a special privilege in knowing them, witnessing their advances, and being here with them to help support their work.”

Shaw is an active member of the Association of Independent Research Institutes and participates in the Biotechnology Council; the Association of University Research Parks; and a variety of academic forums, both in the greater Boston area and nationally.

The Laboratory’s Café Scientifique gatherings are informal discussions about scientific issues and society, current research, and the latest news from the field.  They are free and open to the public, with beer, wine, and sodas available for purchase. The complete 2012 summer Café Scientifique program is available on the Laboratory’s website (www.bigelow.org).

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is an independent, non-profit center for global ocean research, ocean science education, and technology transfer.  A recognized leader in Maine's emerging innovation economy, the Laboratory’s research ranges from microbial oceanography to the large-scale biogeochemical processes that drive ocean ecosystems and global environmental conditions.

BRUNSWICK, ME – The most recent National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators® (NDNQI) report, issued in June 2012, indicates that Mid Coast Hospital ranks in the top 10% of hospitals across the country for the percentage of nationally certified nurses on staff. More than 37% of nurses practicing at Mid Coast Hospital have passed specialty certification exams, compared to the national average of 15%. Although all registered nurses are required to pass an entry level exam in order to be licensed, nurses who commit to specialty certification demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning.

“The high number of specialty certified nurses that work at Mid Coast illustrates our commitment to providing the very best care to our patients and community,” says Deb MacLeod, Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services. “Having such a highly qualified team of caregivers better positions us to respond to the increasingly complex needs of our patients.”

NDNQI is a resource that collects nurse-related data for comparison with more than 1,500 hospitals nationwide. Mid Coast Hospital participates in the database service in order to evaluate and support ongoing efforts to improve patient safety and deliver exceptional patient care. Mid Coast Hospital is the only community hospital in Maine to have achieved national recognition as a Magnet Hospital; an honor bestowed on only 6% of the hospitals in the country for exceptional nursing and patient care.

Mid Coast Hospital extends its sincere gratitude to each of our dedicated nurses for their continued commitment to excellence.

Junebug’s Beach House Opens in York.

To contact us Click HERE

Junebug’s Beach House is now open in York on Route 1 at Caswell Farm. This new shop offers coastal inspired gifts for people, pets and home and specializes in unique, handcrafted goods made in the USA. Former owners of Cool Dogs & Crazy Cats in Ogunquit, Elysa Cooper and Tricia Zerhusen moved back to Maine last year to begin this new venture. “We missed the beauty and quality of life here on the Maine coast… we were really homesick, so we sold Cool Dogs, which we had relocated to North Carolina, loaded up the dogs and here we are”, according to Zerhusen.

Cooper states, “Everything we carry at Junebug’s Beach House evokes the feeling of the seaside lifestyle- through pattern, color or theme.” Both Cooper and Zerhusen have lived by the ocean for years and can not imagine life any other way. ”Our dogs love the beach as much as we do, so we thought we would expand the idea of our pet gift store, add the inspiration of the coast and carry a great selection of gifts for people, pets and home”. She adds, “We originally opened Cool Dogs because of the love for our dogs and our passion for rescue- with Junebug’s, we can continue this and add in our love for the coast.”

The most asked question so far is “Who is Junebug?” says Zerhusen. “The store is named after one of our rescue dogs who had a very difficult beginning… Junebug’s Beach House seemed like a perfect fit”.

“It is a fun, whimsical shop and we just fell in love with the beautiful Caswell Farm location”, Zerhusen explains. Caswell Farm is a fully restored antique farm house built by local builder Bob Cutts. This was a labor of love for Cutts, restoring the property with an amazing attention to detail over the past few years.

Offerings at Junebug’s Beach House include purses, apparel, jewelry, soap and cards for people; candles, frames, signs, pillows, rugs and cast iron accessories for the home and collars, toys, all natural treats, beds, bowls and bath products for pets.

Junebug’s Beach House is located at 908 Route 1 (1 mile N of Stonewall Kitchen) in York. They can be reached at 207-363-6030 or online at www.junebugsbeachhouse.com.

Catcher's Home Run Leads Portland to Victory

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Portland Sea Dogs (35-52) used a little late inning magic of their own and took down the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (35-50) 4-2 on Friday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Red Sox outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Ryan Sweeney were once again in the lineup for Portland as it snapped a season-high six game losing streak.

Trailing 2-1 in the ninth the Sea Dogs put two on with one out in front of Matt Spring. Spring, turned on a 1-2 pitch from Stephen Marek and hit it out of the park for a three run go-ahead home run.

New Hampshire trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but as had been such commonplace in the series, they came back and scored multiple runs in an inning and took the lead.

Kevin Howard began the inning with a single off of Portland starter Drake Britton. Brian Bocock followed with a single to put two on with no outs. John Tolisano sacrificed the runners to second and third with a bunt in front of Brian Van Kirk. Van Kirk singled home the tying run, and Jack Murphy followed with a sac-fly that plated the go-ahead run.

Portland plated its first run in the third inning on back-to-back two out base hits by the top of the order. Ellsbury led off the frame with a double to right, and Jackie Bradley Jr. followed with a single to the wall that plated the centerfielder.

Britton pitched well in his seventh outing with the Sea Dogs. The lefty tossed six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits; he did not walk a batter and struck out five. Caleb Clay was the first out of the pen and earned the win with two scoreless frames. Josh Fields earned the save with a perfect ninth.

New Hampshire sent John Stilson to the mound, and the young righty remained solid in his first professional season. Stilson threw five innings and allowed just one run on four hits; he walked one and struck out five. Marek (1-1) took the loss.

The Sea Dogs can be heard on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs radio network with 95.5/95.9 FM WPEI serving as the flagship station.

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth and written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (credit not final). Grant Curtis, Philip Steuer and Palak Patel are serving as executive producers. “Oz The Great and Powerful” opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.
